Firm Profile

Standard Practice is a Toronto-based architectural firm recognized for its pragmatic, disciplined approach to design and its ability to navigate the technical and regulatory realities of building in complex urban environments. Founded in 2015 as Emerich Kaspar Architect and later rebranded as Standard Practice, the firm’s name stems from the inherent contradictions between today's architectural ideals and the reality of practice. Chiefly, architecture is anything but standard.

Rooted in Toronto, the practice brings a deep local knowledge of municipal approvals, building codes, and procurement processes, enabling it to guide projects efficiently from early feasibility through construction. Our technical fluency supports a design philosophy that balances ambition with restraint, ensuring that projects are both conceptually strong and practically achievable.

Standard Practice offers full architectural services across a wide range of project types, including residential, commercial, and civic work. Its portfolio spans modest infill projects, laneway and garden suites, mid-density housing, and large-scale mixed-use developments. This breadth reflects a commitment to addressing contemporary urban challenges—intensification, housing supply, sustainability, and long-term durability—while maintaining a consistent focus on context, spatial quality and construct-ability.

We prioritize architectural rigour, spatial intelligence, material honesty, and social/cultural purpose over superficial or trend-driven style.
