Thorold Park

Thorold, Canada

6 Sites

330 Units

19,300 m²  (GCA)

Residential, wood frame, midrise, Lowrise, Brownfield, Freehold, multi-generational, townhouse, Retail

These six irregular and discontinuous sites are remnants of a reclaimed railway spur line. The former rail corridor cut diagonally through several city blocks and across the municipal street grid in an irregular manner. The result today is a series of fragmented parcels slicing through a post-war neighbourhood of small, detached bungalows.

Appropriate development of these unconventional sites requires an inherently sensitive intervention. The design objective, therefore, was to establish a series of housing typologies that respect the existing residential fabric while accommodating much-needed growth in a neighbourhood located less than a ten-minute walk from the town’s historic centre.
